Bathroom renovations can feel exciting and overwhelming at the same time. You want to end up with a space you love, but without stretching your budget more than necessary. The good news is, there are many ways to achieve the look you want without overspending. It really comes down to knowing where to save and where it’s worth investing. If you’re planning a renovation, these kinds of bathroom renovation tips can help you make smarter decisions along the way. Here are our insights on where you can save, and where it’s worth spending a little more.

Where to Save in Your Bathroom Renovation?
Keep your plumbing where it is
One of the biggest costs in a bathroom renovation comes from moving plumbing, especially the toilet. Keeping everything in its current location can significantly reduce costs, sometimes even cutting them in half or more. When we design a space, we usually present two options. One is the ideal layout, which often involves a full reconfiguration. The other is a more budget-friendly version that keeps plumbing where it is. In the end, it comes down to how functional your current layout is and whether the improvement justifies the added cost.
Floor and shower tiles
There is a huge range of tile options available today, which makes this a great place to save. You can often find tiles that achieve the look you want at a much more accessible price point. However, if you’re drawn to bold patterns, those usually come at a higher cost. One way to balance that is to use patterned tile in a smaller area, like the floor, and pair it with a more affordable option in the shower, such as a classic subway tile.
When it comes to installation, labour can also impact cost more than expected. Large tiles, like 24” x 48”, typically require two installers, while smaller formats can be handled by one. More complex patterns, such as chevron layouts, take additional time and precision, which increases labour costs. And yes, our tiler absolutely loves us when we incorporate chevron tiles. That was sarcasm… but you can’t deny how good it looks in our Milton Bungalow project.

Toilets
There are countless toilet options on the market. Two-piece toilets are generally more affordable, while one-piece and wall-mounted options tend to cost more but are easier to clean. Wall-mounted toilets also require a thicker wall to house the tank, and any future maintenance may involve opening that wall. There are also upgraded features, like heated bidet seats, which can be a great addition but do require a higher budget and compatibility with specific models. The most important thing is to choose a toilet that performs well. From there, you can decide whether additional features are worth the investment.
Lighting
Lighting is another area where you can save without sacrificing style. There is such a wide selection available that you can find fixtures at various price points that look equally good. A wall sconce, for example, can range from $50 to $500. One recommendation is to choose fixtures that support LED bulbs. They’re more energy-efficient and will save you money over time.

Tub
Interestingly, many clients have tubs that they rarely use, yet still feel the need to replace them with something expensive. If your shower is your primary focus, you can absolutely choose a more budget-friendly acrylic tub. In our Milton Bungalow project, we replaced a drop-in corner tub with a freestanding acrylic option that we found on sale.
Where to SPLURGE in your bathroom renovation
There are some items that you should just invest the extra money into. Here are some items that are worth spending more for your bathroom.
Faucets & Showerheads
Plumbing fixtures are not the place to cut corners. Choosing cheaper options might seem like a way to save, but it can lead to issues down the line, whether it’s leaks or poor performance. Finishes also impact cost. Chrome is typically the most affordable, while other finishes increase the price. One approach we often use is mixing metals, which allows you to balance cost while still achieving a more elevated look.
Curbless shower
Curbless showers are a great investment, especially if you’re thinking long-term. They eliminate the need to step over a threshold, making them more accessible and easier to clean. They also create a cleaner, more modern look. However, they need to be installed properly. Not all contractors are experienced with curbless showers, and incorrect slopes can lead to drainage issues.

Ventilation
Proper ventilation is essential. Without it, moisture builds up over time, leading to mould and mildew. This is one of those elements that isn’t visible in the final design but plays a critical role in how the space performs.
In-floor heating
In-floor heating is definitely a splurge, but one that many clients feel is worth it. It adds comfort, especially during colder months, and creates a more spa-like experience. It can also be more efficient in heating the space, as heat rises naturally.

Cabinets and Countertops
If this is your main bathroom, it’s a space that will see daily use. Investing in quality cabinetry and hardware is important, as these elements are used constantly. Adding organizational features inside the cabinetry can also make a big difference in how the space functions.
Countertops are another area where a thoughtful choice can elevate the space. Laminate is often the standard option, and while it works, it’s not always the most durable or visually appealing. Quartz is a great upgrade, but pricing varies depending on the design. Choosing a solid colour quartz can help keep costs down, while veined options tend to be significantly more expensive.

A bathroom renovation doesn’t have to exceed your budget to be successful. The key is understanding where to invest and where you can be more flexible. When you approach it with the right balance, you can create a space that feels both functional and refined. If you’re looking for more bathroom renovation tips, taking the time to define your priorities will make every decision easier.
