We are seeing more and more kitchens with a double island. Excessive? Maybe, but they do have a purpose and offer benefits. A double island is not just to fill an empty void in a large kitchen.
Why have a double kitchen island?
There are several types of kitchens that can really benefit from a double counter. Letโs explore the different functions.
The Entertainment Kitchen
The initial appeal of the double island is the amount of counter space. For the person who loves to entertain, a double island can offer plenty of counter space, along with extra storage. The main island can serve as your prepping area with a sink, dishwasher etc. The second island can be dedicated for entertaining and eating, often with an area for guests to relax. This can include bar stools, bar sink and/or beverage fridge.
We have found a shift in the way homeowners use their spaces. The traditional dining room has become less desired; instead, they opt for an eat-in kitchen with a large island. This concept allows families to gather together more casually and not so formally. This change in use has allowed the kitchen island to become so much more than just a prep area. The first thing many of our clients ask us when designing a kitchen is, how big of an island can I get in here?
The Chefโs Kitchen
As mentioned previously, kitchens have become the all-encompassing space that family and friends flock to. You donโt have to actually be a professional Chef to have a Chefโs kitchen. If preparing meals for family and friends are a big part of your lifestyle, and it is more than a chore, then you may appreciate having a Chefโs kitchen. What exactly is the key component to a Chefโs kitchen? Ample Space. This is where the double island comes in handy. The extra storage and counter surface becomes very important.
I personally, like to bake. In those instances I would love to work in a kitchen with a double island. One space for prep, and the other for cooling and decorating.
The Kosher Kitchen
Kosher kitchens require 50% more storage space than a standard kitchen. The key to a Kosher designed kitchen is to prevent cross-contamination between dairy and meat products. Which is why, in luxurious designed kitchens, you will find two of everything; two sinks, two dishwashers, two ovens, two microwaves, two sets of dish ware, two sets of flatware etc. Counter space becomes an important preparation area for separating meat and dairy. So if you have the space to do a double island, it is a perfect solution. One counter can be dedicated for preparing meat, and the other for dairy.
