There wasn’t anything particularly special about the existing mudroom and laundry, yet it’s one of the most used spaces in the home. The goal was to bring it to life through texture, colour, and material choices. What started as a simple functional upgrade quickly turned into one of our favourite spaces in the Unionville Residence. If you’re looking for ways to rethink a highly used area, these kinds of mudroom laundry design ideas can completely change how the space feels and functions.
The footprint itself remained the same. Instead of reworking the layout, the focus was on improving function and storage, while elevating the overall look. As you can see in the before and after, small changes made a big difference.

Starting with the Floor
The design for this space actually started from the ground up. The large-scale terrazzo porcelain tile became the anchor for the entire room. It sets the tone for the colour palette, offering a neutral base with subtle pops of colour, while still maintaining an earthy feel.
Adding Texture and Warmth
To build on that foundation, we introduced reeded wood in the bench area. It adds texture and dimension, especially when paired with the soft yellow velvet-like fabric. At the same time, it ties back to design elements used throughout the rest of the home, creating a sense of continuity. The wall hooks bring in a playful element. They’re functional, but they also help pull together the colours in the space, adding a lighter, more relaxed feel to an otherwise practical area.

Balancing Materials
To introduce a more natural and grounded element, we selected a concrete-look quartz for the countertop and carried it through to the backsplash. The Rugged Concrete quartz from Caesarstone stood out immediately. It has depth, variation, and a slightly industrial finish that contrasts beautifully with the lighter cabinetry. This balance between softer tones and more textured, raw materials is something we often explore in mudroom laundry room design ideas, especially in spaces that need to feel both functional and visually engaging.

Final Thoughts
Spaces like this are often overlooked. They’re designed to be practical first, and everything else comes second. But with the right approach, they can become just as considered as any other room in the home. In this case, it wasn’t about changing everything, but about making a few intentional choices that brought personality into a very functional space.
Rather than treating the mudroom and laundry as purely utilitarian, think of it as an extension of your home’s overall design. When materials, textures, and colours are given the same attention here, the entire home starts to feel more cohesive.
