There was nothing special about the existing mudroom/laundry, yet it is a highly used space. Wanting to breathe new life through texture, colors, and materials, we had some fun with the design, and it ended up being one of our favorite spaces in the Unionville Residence.
The footprint of the space remained the same. This design process was more about adding better function and storage while upgrading the overall look as you can see in the before and after image below.
The inspiration for this space came from the floor. The large-scale terrazzo porcelain sets the stage and sets the tone for the color palette. Offering a neutral base with punches of color, yet still feeling earthy.
Bringing in the reeded wood not only gives the bench area texture and dimension against the yellow velvet-like fabric, but it also ties in the design elements from the rest of the home. The playful wall hooks add a sense of whimsy while pulling together the colors in the space.
Wanting to bring a natural element into the space, we selected a concrete-like quartz for the countertop and continued that into the backsplash. We absolutely fell in love with the Rugged Concrete quartz from Caesarstone, through the touch, and depth of movement and variations in the deep concrete greys and white-haze patina that gives it its industrial finish. It also provides a welcome contrast against the light custom cabinetry.
